Bowen Therapy
What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a form of gentle, non-invasive body work that consists of small, precise, cross-fibre moves on specific points of the muscle, tendon, ligament and connective tissue.
Treatment can be carried out with the patient fully clothed in light clothing.
Bowen embraces any condition from sports injuries to chronic or organic complaints.
(With medical supervision where appropriate)
How can Bowen Help Me?
Bowen Therapy facilitates the balancing of a broad range of conditions. It can address any problem (with medical supervision where appropriate) as the treatment is holistic.
Bowen produces an integrated body response, and consequently Results can include improved circulation, reduced swelling, lymphatic and venous draining, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins, increased joint mobility, posture clearance of dysfunctional debris, normalisation of cellular physiology and tissue integrity.
Bowen Therapy works to restore the fluidity and physical integrity of the connective tissue, thereby restoring the mechanics of the body quickly.
A session can last from 30 minutes to an hour, and generally only 2-3 sessions are necessary. The pattern of treatment will vary, depending on whether the condition is acute, sub-acute or chronic.
Who Can Benefit from Bowen?
Because this technique is so gentle, it is safe to use on anyone from babies to the elderly, pregnant women, professional, sports people and immobile.
Ones does not have to be unwell to benefit from Bowen treatment, it is an ideal way to help body function at an optimum state of health and efficiency.
The History of Bowen
Bowen Therapy is based on the work developed over a lifetime by the late Tom Bowen of Geelong, Victoria, (1916 – 1982). His gift for being able to restore bodily functions earned him vast reputation as a healer.
His approach was a simple energy correction procedure to instigate a change in the balance of the body, bringing the body’s innate healing abilities into action.

How does Bowen Work?
When your body loses mobility through trauma, injury, illness or simply trough reduced usage, then the body’s connective tissue (fascia) loses fluidity. Hence it is unable to function properly.
Connective tissue, being a gel like substance, has the capacity to move between a fluid or relatively solid state very rapidly. It is this essential principle upon which Bowen Therapy is based. When the fluid content of the tissue is decreased, multiple restrictions often associated with pain may be evident in the body such as:
• Reduced range of movement
• Stiffness of limbs
• Muscle adhesions and loss of muscle strength
• Accumulation of fluid
Functions of Connective Tissues are:
To support muscle shape
To regulate fluid storage eg (water, lymph, blood) and to apply vital nutrients whilst assisting removal of metabolic wastes.
To absorb shock and transmit mechanical force.
To protect organs
To repair the body through production of collagen.
